Career and Technology Foundations (CTF) provides students in Grades 7 to 9 the opportunity to explore their interests and solve real-world problems within various occupational areas and technologies.
| Communication and Technology | Communication and Technologies is a module based course that is student interest directed. Students are able to develop their problem-solving skills through a variety of modules relating to programming, information processing, robotics, stop-motion animation and video game creation. Students will also have an opportunity to take their idea and turn it into a prototype. This course will provide students with the flexibility to adapt to various situations that can be useful in future careers. The modules available to students will depend on their grades and previous knowledge in a particular area. |
| Construction | The focus in Construction is developing skills and knowledge using some of the basic hand tools that are related to construction by safely transforming common wood materials into useful products. This will be completed by making hand projects like an oven squirrel, small projects like air dragsters and bandsaw boxes, to large projects like a cabriole leg stool or a carrying tray. Students will also have the opportunity to use an auto Computer Aided Design (CAD) by taking a 2-dimensional drawing and putting it into a 3-dimensional program to be printed. |
| Design Studies | Design Studies is a module based course that is student interest directed. Students are able to develop their problem-solving skills through a variety of modules relating to careers in journalism, interior design, photography, digital art and print design. Students will develop fundamental skills, and discover the impact that design has on relaying messages through the use of technologies in these areas. This course will provide students with the flexibility to adapt to various situations, and to construct and relay messages with the purpose of connecting, informing, or entertaining, that can be useful in future careers. Students will also work with basic layout and design techniques as well as various print reproduction processes. |
| Fashion Studies | Fashion Studies is the study of all things textile. Students will explore different textiles and experiment with creative ways to redesign, recycle or restore a project by repairing, customizing, or embellishing it. Students will learn different textile design techniques, how to safely use and care for sewing and pressing equipment, and apply these skills during project assembly. Projects available to students will depend on their grades and previous knowledge in a particular area. |
| Foods | Foods Studies provides a unique learning opportunity where students are constantly engaged in problem solving activities that taste great! The class is structured to allow students to develop food preparation and cooking skills while encouraging them to look at food items in new ways. Students will focus on basic cooking and baking techniques and work their way up to a full meal plan. |
| Recreational Leadership | The goal of recreational leadership is for students to create fitness activities and develop basic individual fitness plans. Students will achieve goals for health-related and performance-related components. Students will also learn prevention, assessment and management techniques related to injuries that may occur during recreation and sporting events and activities. This course will also explore the role of the athletic therapist, first-aid and the identification of first-aid supplies, common injuries, and apply basic taping and wrapping techniques to common sports related injuries. |
